Mr. Dot
In the beginning of the school year, I teach a lesson based on the quote by Paul Klee,
" A line is a dot going for a walk."
I draw a dot on the board and we watch the dot walk in a curvy line, a zig zag line, a bumpy line. He skips to create a dashed line. He walks in a circle to create a spiral. He walks back and forth to create a cross hatch. Soon the board is filled with lines created by Mr. Dot and first graders have acquired the visual information they need to make their own Mr. Dot going for a walk. We build on this knowledge to create all of our work, using dots as destination points in our compositions and using our visual dictionary of lines in all of our art.

Every week, Mr. Dot hides in the art room in different places.
He wears hats for different occasions and he was even at the Halloween parade
(we think it was Mrs. Frueh dressed up like Mr. Dot). When students made their own Mr. Dot
to go home over the holidays, there was much excitement and creativity in the art room.
We love that Mr. Dot.

Spreading Winter Cheer
First and second graders at Tate Woods created winter themed place mats
to be delivered to the DuPage Senior Citizens Meals on Wheels program.
Students created sparkling snowflakes, playful penguins, silly snowmen,
happy new year rainbows, warm winter houses or other kid inspired ideas.
We're spreading winter cheer!

Hello
Welcome to the art room at Tate Woods school.
This is a colorful place painted blue, orange, green and yellow
and we make lots of colorful art here.
