Op Art

Second graders learned about Op Art. They practiced using a ruler to draw a pattern of lines.

They picked a color palette using 4 colors.

Using the same color palette, they made a grid with a shape and colored an A/B pattern ...

... and attached it to the background.

Family Reading Night

It was a pleasure to see you and say hello at the family reading night on Thursday. We enjoyed seeing the monochromatic selfies some of you made to add to our hundreds of smiles.

Clay Pumpkins

First graders used their knowledge of color mixing to create fall pumpkins with Model Magic clay using only red, blue and yellow.

The clay does an amazing job of showing the transformation of color and the excitement in the art room was high when students saw orange emerge from mixing yellow and red and green emerge from mixing green and blue.

They created 2 pinch pots, one for the bottom and one for the lid, used green for the stem and made snail and turtle friends with the left over green.

When dry, the little pumpkin will go inside hidden by the lid.

Mixing colors, pinch pots, coils and hand building - lots of learning in this lesson.

Paper

If there is one word I would use to tell parents about what kids want in the art room it would be paper. Kids want paper - any kind of paper - xerox paper, envelopes, post it notes, newspaper, note cards - they will take any kind of paper and use what they have to create art. 

I have scraps of colored paper left over from lessons and they will take that paper and create the most amazing things when they have extra time in the art room - hats, paper cell phones, caves, animals, houses and just plain coloring and drawing - they love it. You don't have to spend a lot of money to provide hours of creativity for your child - paper, scissors, glue stick and crayons - they will take it from there. 

Starry Night Complete

Last week students finished their Starry Night paintings with a town, a tree and a sprinkle of glitter.

Starry Night

A classic! Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh created by the second graders of Tate Woods. Chalk, paint, oil pastel, makers, colored pencils and best of all - GLITTER! Many steps to this lesson and lots of learning. Here is the beginning - paint.

Next drawing, coloring, cutting, creating.

Lots of Lines

First graders met Mr. Dot. He's a friendly guy who lives in the art room and moves around from place to place each week.  He's also pretty good at teaching first graders how to make many kinds of lines.

Mr. Dot went for a walk on his paper zig zagging, jumping and skipping. As he walked along he showed students how to make lots of different kinds of lines. They used sharpies to draw their lines and used paint to complete their work.

September 15th in International Dot Day - we will listen to the story "The Dot" by Peter H. Reynolds and learn how a small dot can inspire and give confidence to any artist. Mr. Dot would be proud!
